There are many mentally unstable people in the state and not enough beds to care for them. Many of these people cannot afford private health services and I believe it is the state’s responsibility to help care for these people. Cook County Jail is filled with people who should be in a hospital for mental illness. We need to stop spending our money on jails, and start spending it on hospitals to give people the help they need. I am firm believer in opening closed facilities (like Tinley Park if possible) or making additional beds available in other facilities to give people the help they need.
Every day when I take a short cut under Lower Wacker Driver walking to my train from work, day after day, year after year, I see people who are in badly need of mental health services. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be serving these people.
